How I am making money online

In October of 2008 I created my first real (non-free) website, Sailing and Such. My intentions were to help other sailors and information that I had been looking hard for, easier to find. Mainly, this information was about sailboat project, sailboat maintenance and anything to do with sailboat work.

Once I created the website, people started visiting and complimenting the site and saying what a great idea it was to have a lot ofthat kind of information in one place. I really enjoyed the comments and they made me work harder and make the website larger and larger.

Then, I started reading up on making money online and I registered for Google Adsense which was a great decision. I wasnt getting alot of traffic to my website so I really havnt made all that much money in the first three months but its a start. Making any money online is a great thing to me and the website is something I do not have to actually "do" to make money, it just does it on its own.

Now, I am venturing into something called PayPerPost where I plan to post articles on my blogs about certain products and stuff, and get paid for it. We will see how it works!

My dream is create a steady income online so that I can someday live on sailboat and cruise wherever it is warm!

Online Woodworking In America

This year there will be a first at Woodworking in America. In addition to the normal lectures and classes about all sorts of woodworking, there will be an Online Woodworking Roundtable on Friday afternoon at 4:30. Either Popular Woodworking has run out of real woodworking to discuss (I find this hard to believe) or were really onto something with this online woodworking thing (seems equally unlikely).

Stand back offline woodworkers. Here we come.

The Online Woodworking Roundtable panel will include my fellow +Modern Woodworkers Association podcast hosts, +Christopher Adkins and +Tom Iovino. Filling out the roster will be online heavy hitters +Marc Spagnuolo, +Matt Vanderlist and +Shannon Rogers of Wood Talk Show. Im not on the panel myself, but Ill be in the front row leading the hecklers.

From the lecture description:
With Marc Spagnuolo, Matt Vanderlist, Shannon Rogers, Tom Iovino, Chris Adkins and more. Few things have changed the face of woodworking more than the advent of the Internet. Whether you enjoy the latest, cutting-edge power tools or want to learn more about the traditional skills of centuries past, there are web sites and bloggers that will capture your interest. Join a panel of the best-known online woodworkers and educators to find out how to get the most out of your online woodworking experience, discover what goes into creating valuable online content and learn how they are reaching out to a new generation of craftsmen and craftswomen.

If youre reading this, you know about the online woodworking community. Please join us for the lecture on Friday afternoon. Well talk of all the community has to offer and demonstrate that it is THE place to be in the current world of woodworking.

Fabric for the Guest Room and Tips for Ordering Fabric Online

The fabric arrived yesterday so I can get started on the guest room!

fabric 1. 2. 3. 4.
We are building a headboard and the 54" fabric width is tricky with the way I want the pattern to run (solid fabrics are more diy friendly!) I think I have found a solution without it looking pieced together ...

Whenever I open fabrics that Ive ordered online I hold my breath - hoping that they look like the photo ... luckily all of these did!

but that hasnt always been the case - I fell in love with a richloom print, waited for it to get off of back order and when it arrived it didnt look quite like the photo :(

via

The photo from the website (top photo) looks vibrant with rich colors while the photo that I took looks washed out - still pretty, but not what I wanted - so I thought I would share some tips on what have helped me order online ...

1. Google the fabric and check out images of scale and color: many fabrics have photos of pillows, chairs, etc. that have been taken in a variety of lighting - a great way to get a feel for what the fabric will look like

2. For photos that include a ruler: make sure to check the scale - sometimes photos can be deceiving - the pattern can look larger or smaller than it actually is

3. Take note of the material: Becoming familiar with fabric types gives you a better idea of the weight and texture of the fabric. i.e. duck cotton will have a tight stiffer weave and medium weight  - while a cotton sateen will be a finer weave, lighter weight, and smoother touch

Finally when possible, I would recommend ordering from fabric.com - they offer free shipping for orders over $35, great prices, and FREE RETURN shipping!

Stay tuned to see my solution for 54" fabric for a wider headboard (fingers crossed it works!)
